Colorado Facts

Interesting trivia about our state outsiders may not be aware of.

The white in the State flag symbolizes Colorado's snowcapped mountains, the blue symbolizes clear blue skies, the red symbolizes the reddish soil and the golden yellow represents the Sun.

Colorado is the Centennial State due to being admitted to the Union in 1876 as the 38th state, 100 years after the signing of the US Declaration of Independence. 

Colorado is the only state with all borders made of lines of Latitude and Longitude making Colorado the only state forming a rectangle.  At the south-west corner of the state, not far from Cortez (home of CDA court Sacred Heart) is where four states meet; you can stride four states (Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico).

Colorado is the eighth largest of the states with 104,100 square miles. The San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, roughly 8,000 sq. miles, is five times the size of the state of Rhode Island.

Colorado is the highest state. The mean elevation of the land in Colorado is higher than the mean elevation of all other states.  Colorado is home to the highest paved road in the United States; the Mt. Evans road which reaches an altitude of 14,130 feet above sea level.  Colorado contains 75% of the land area of the U.S. with an altitude over 10,000 feet. Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the United States at 10,152 feet elevation.  Some mountain pass roads remain closed during winter months - too dangerous to even try to keep open, they are usually cleared of snow and opened around Memorial Day.

Katherine Lee Bates wrote “America the Beautiful” after being inspired by the view from Pikes Peak, near Colorado Springs (near court Holy Family).

The tallest sand dune in America is in Great Sand Dunes National Monument outside of Alamosa (home to court Sangre de Cristo). This bizarre 46,000-acre landscape of 700-foot sand peaks was the creation of ocean waters and wind more than one million years ago.

The highest suspension bridge in the world is over the Royal Gorge near Canon City. The Royal Gorge Bridge spans the Arkansas River at a height of 1,053 feet.

There are nearly 20 rivers whose headwaters begin in Colorado, with the Continental Divide directing each river's course.  Some of the well known rivers include:  Colorado, Rio Grande, Arkansas, South Platte.
